It took half a lifetime to recognise that my compulsion to collect and archive was a continuous rehearsal for the making of art.
My collections of memories, stories, objects and materials act as real and metaphorical markers of time, place and identity within my practice.

The British poet Philip Larkin speaks eloquently on the subject of archiving (or preserving as he calls it) and the relationship of archiving to the making of art.
“I write poems to preserve things I have seen/thought/felt... both for myself and for others, though I feel my primary responsibility is the experience itself, which I am trying to keep from oblivion for its own sake. Why I should do this I have no idea, though I think the impulse to preserve lies at the bottom of all art.” - The British Poet and Writer, Philip Larkin
